5 Steps Towards a Pain-Free Life with Myofascial Energetic Release (MER®)

We’ve all been taught to treat pain like an enemy, something to silence quickly with a pill, an injection or by pretending it isn’t there. But what if pain isn’t the problem? What if it’s the messenger?

Chronic pain vs. persistent pain

A pain syndrome is a condition in which pain itself becomes the central issue. It no longer serves as a useful warning signal, but continues long after any obvious injury has healed.

Chronic pain is the traditional medical term: pain that lasts longer than three to six months, beyond the normal tissue-healing time. Persistent pain is the more modern, compassionate term many practitioners now use for the same experience. “Persistent” feels less hopeless and permanent. It simply acknowledges that the pain is still here, still speaking and still asking to be heard.

In both cases the body is not broken. It is communicating.

The body cries out like a child

Imagine a small child who starts crying. The healthy response is not to quieten them with a tablet or tell them to be quiet. It is to listen, and to understand what they need: comfort, safety, rest, movement or simply to be seen. Your body does exactly the same.

When we ignore the cry with painkillers alone, forced “positive thinking” or avoidance, the message doesn’t disappear. It gets louder. The tissues tighten, and the fascia, the web of connective tissue around every muscle, organ and nerve, begins to contract. In my experience a large share of long-term pain comes from these soft-tissue contractions rather than from bones or joints.

In states of depression or long isolation the tissue changes: it loses its healthy, gel-like quality and starts to harden. Scar tissue forms and elasticity disappears. Emotional patterns become stored as physical restrictions, and poor posture and unresolved emotions reinforce each other in a vicious circle.

The good news: pain is a guide, not a life sentence. When we stop silencing the child and start listening, real change becomes possible.

What is Myofascial Energetic Release (MER®)?

MER® is a holistic bodywork approach that combines deep myofascial release with emotional and energetic awareness. It works directly with the fascia and the nervous system to release stored tension, restore natural movement and give the body’s own intelligence room to do its work. Instead of chasing symptoms, MER® follows the body’s signals and gently invites the tissues to let go. Often, when the underlying restrictions are addressed, pain eases on its own.

The 5 steps of MER®

These five steps form the heart of the MER® process:

  1. Release of the tissues. We begin by listening to the body’s cry through gentle, sustained pressure and movement. The practitioner follows the fascia exactly where it wants to go, never forcing, always following. This is where most people feel the first deep relief: hardened areas soften, blood flow returns and the healthy, gel-like quality of the tissue comes back.
  2. Structural alignment. Once the tissues are freed, the body finds its way back into better alignment. Shoulders drop, the spine lengthens, the pelvis balances. You don’t have to “try” to stand taller; the structure reorganises itself when the restrictions are gone.
  3. Emotional awareness. Pain and emotion are deeply intertwined. We create a safe space for whatever has been stored in the body: grief, anger, fear, shame. As the tissues release, emotions often surface and move through. This is not talk therapy, it is body-led emotional release. You simply witness what arises.
  4. Re-education of patterns and beliefs. We gently update old habits: how you sit, stand and breathe, and even the stories you tell yourself about your body and your worth. Healthier patterns replace the old protective ones, and the nervous system learns it is safe to be open and relaxed again.
  5. Homework: daily practice. Lasting freedom comes from integration. You receive simple, personal practices (gentle movement, breathwork, self-release techniques, awareness exercises) for home. A few minutes a day keep the channels open and help old patterns from returning.

Pain as your wise inner guide

When you treat your body like the crying child who only wants to be heard, everything changes. Pain stops being the enemy and becomes a loyal friend, constantly pointing you back towards balance, authenticity and self-care. You don’t have to fight it. You only have to listen.

If you are tired of managing pain and ready to work with it differently, Myofascial Energetic Release offers a clear, compassionate path. The body already knows how to find its balance; MER® gives it the space, the listening and the support it has been asking for. You can experience and learn the method in our MER® training in Tallinn.
